Best Road Trips From Sydney

Keen for a trip away? Here are 5 of our favourite NSW road trips.

With NSW COVID travel restrictions eased and the NSW government Dine and Discover vouchers, it is the perfect time to plan a road trip!

There are so many great places to visit in NSW, it is hard to choose but here are 5 of our best road trips from Sydney.

Ideal for a long weekend or even a week or two, these road trips are suitable for a single/couple or a family looking for adventure or just to spend time together.

Sydney to Dubbo

Distance: 5 hours (390 kms) from Sydney.

Duration: This is a great long weekend trip.

Toll fees: There are no tolls once you get on the M4 after Parramatta

Best for:  Singles, couples or families.

Dubbo, located in central west NSW, just 5 hours from Sydney.  A pleasant trip over the Blue Mountains via Mudgee or Bathurst.  Our preferred route is via the M4 through Katoomba and the Castlereagh highway through the picturesque town of Mudgee.

The NRMA Dubbo Holiday park is a great stop with a pool and playground.  You can bike ride/walk over the bridge to the main shopping strip.

If you don’t need a lot of facilities, the Poplars Caravan Park is right in the centre of town

Best attractions to check out – Dubbo Gaol and of course Taronga Western Plains Zoo.  You can ride your bike to the zoo on the dedicated bike track, and a bike is a great way to get around the zoo.  You can hire bikes and golf buggies at the zoo entry.

Allow a day for your visit to the zoo. There are plenty of animals plus cafes and a waterpark for the kids to cool off and If you have the time, a day trip to Wellington Caves is well worth it.

Sydney to Brunswick Heads

Distance: 8 hours (770km) from Sydney

Duration: At least a week

Toll fees: Tolls on Northconnex

Best for: Romantic getaway, a family adventure for singles, couples and families

Always beautiful Brunswick Heads, this small seaside town has not changed much over the 40 odd years we have visited. An easy drive up the M1 with a stopover along the way at Port Macquarie.

Our favourite stop – Reflections Holiday Parks Terrace Reserve, right on the Simpsons Creek with access to the surf beach over the bridge.

Morning walks on the beach, fabulous sunsets, delicious cakes from the local bakery and cold beers at the Brunswick Hotel – what more do you need.

Experience the creek and river at their best with a kayak or stand-up paddleboard.

Must do day trips:  Byron Bay for the markets, shopping and beach; Mullumbimby to lunch at the Middle Pub; and Nimbin to check out the beautiful hinterland scenery and all that makes up this alternative village.

Sydney to Forster-Tuncurry

Distance: 3.5 hours (315km) from Sydney

Duration: Ideal trip for a long weekend or a week

Toll fees: Tolls on Northconnex

Best for: Singles, couples and families looking to relax and enjoy water activities

Fabulous Forster-Tuncurry – so much to enjoy and only 3.5 hours from Sydney straight up the M1

We have 2 favourite caravan parks here, on the Forster side is the Forster Beach Caravan Park, on the Tuncurry side is the Tuncurry Holiday Park. There are plenty of things to do in Forster-Tuncurry, you can walk or ride your bike across the bridge, Swim at Main Beach, grab a coffee and breakfast at Beach Bums cafe, paddle and swim in the lake, go Whale watching on the magnificent Amaroo and of course make sure you check out the resident Osprey on the bridge light post!

Sydney to The Entrance

Distance: 1.5 hours (110km) from Sydney

Duration: Stay a couple of days or a week

Toll fees: Tolls on Northconnex

Best for: Singles, couples and families

The Entrance is just 1.5 hours north of Sydney on the M1.

Our caravan park of choice – Dunleith Tourist Park.  It is located right on the lake and is a pleasant walk or bike ride across the bridge to the town centre with restaurants and pubs

Absolute waterfront sites with access to the lake and surf.  Perfect for the kayak and stand-up paddleboard. Also a great cafe just outside the park.

Sydney to Port Macquarie

Another of our best road trips, Port Macquarie!
