Discovery Holiday Park – Lane Cove

Location: 13 Plassey Road, Macquarie Park, NSW, 2113

Located within the 1,000 acres of Lane Cove National Park and only 10km from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, this park is a peaceful oasis in a very busy city.  Perfect for couples and families, this caravan park is a great base to explore Sydney and of course the beautiful National Park.

There are plenty of activities in the National Park including hiking, canoeing and cycling.  The walk along the river is pleasant with abundant wildlife such as lizards and birds.  

With the North Ryde train station within walking distance, it is quick and easy to get into the city to enjoy the many attractions of Sydney Harbour.

Shopping is within walking/cycling distance at Lachlan’s Square Village, just on the other side of the M7.

We definitely think this hidden gem is one of Sydney’s best camping spots!

Blackheath Glen Reserve

Location: 540 Megalong Road, Megalong Valley, NSW, 2785

Price: Free

Accessibility: 2WD, Tent, Camper Trailer, Small Motorhome

Amenities:

  • Unmarked camping areas
  • Pets on Leash

This small camping reserve, located in the Megalong Valley, is one of Blue Mountains City Council’s free campgrounds.  Located about 15 minutes from Blackheath, groceries and additional amenities are close by.  Shower at the aquatic centre and for a small fee, you can use the Blackheath Caravan Park’s Dump point.

You need to take your own water and firewood but there are Pit toilets available.  Booking is unavailable, you can camp in any available spot.

The Blue Mountains offer many outdoor activities including bushwalking with plenty of easy to difficult walks.  First place to stop after setting up your camp is the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre to get all the information on walks, sights and activities.

Just a short drive up from Blackheath Glen Reserve is the Coachwood Glen Nature Trail, it is a quick and easy walk with small waterfalls and some magnificent trees. Well worth a visit.

NRMA Parks – Shellharbour Beachside Tourist Park

Location: 1 John Street, ShellHarbour, NSW, 2529

Just 2 hours from Sydney with grassy powered sites, this park is great for couples and families. You can do as little or as much as you want here.

The park is right on the beach but an easy walk to shops and the pub.  It is a short distance from many local attractions including the Illawarra Fly treetop walk, Killalea State Park, Jamberoo Action Park and the Minnamurra Rainforest. 

Plenty of opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, fishing and surfing so definitely pack swimmers and a fishing rod.

Island Leisure Village on Fenninghams Island

Location: 15 Fenninghams Island Rd, Bobs Farm NSW 2316

Located just 2.5 hours from Sydney is the peaceful and relaxing Island Leisure Village park on Fenninghams Island at Port Stephens.  Waterfront powered/unpowered bush sites, surrounded by National Park, close to surf beaches and sand dunes.

The sandy beach is perfect for boating, fishing, and swimming.  Walk straight from the park along the bush tracks on the water’s edge.

The resort-style pool is a bonus!
